Most of the time, we’re focused on ways to go green that will help us sustain a decent lifestyle that we’ve become accustomed to without harming the environment. It’s natural to be concerned about the affect the damage will have on future generations of us humans, since that is our kids and grandkids, but let’s not forget our furry friends in the meantime!
Here’s 5 ways to go green with your pets:
- Adopt Your New Pet:
Most pet breeders have one goal in their business and that is to raise as many purebred animals to sell as possible. Unfortunately, a large number of them have been known to mistreat these innocent animals. There’s been an overwhelming amount of documented proof of poor living conditions, abuse, overbreeding, and even slaughter of unwanted animals that weren’t purchased. If you’re considering a new furry companion, please take the time to meet some of the pets who are stuck in the crowded shelters with no home. - Have Your Pet Spayed Or Neutered:
Let’s stop the madness in number 1 above. Every day, in the United States alone, there is over 70,000 kittens and puppies born. Yes, every day! It’s quite obvious that we have our share of homeless pets in every area, so it’s time we did something about it. In addition to cutting back on strays, getting your pet spayed or neutered has been known to help them live longer, helping to avoid many types of cancer.
- Feed Them Organic Too!
Did you know that many pet foods consist of low-grade animal by-products that were leftover from the beef and poultry slaughterhouses. You know, the stuff, that’s unfit and too disgusting for human consumption? Why would you want to feed that to your pet? That meat is often even waste from dying and diseased animals.
Similar to human food, the better the quality is, the better chance to fight disease and live a long, healthy life. Organic pet foods have to meet an extremely strict, high standard certified by the USDA and will also be very clear on the label what the ingredients consists of. - Sustainable Products And Toys:
Just like going green with toys for your kids, the same can apply to your pets! By giving them sustainable toys and other products, they can be part of the solution to the problem we’ve created. There’s a wealth of recycled products for pets these days, so why not get them a hemp colar or an organic cotton blanket for the sofa? What about an acorn for yourt kitten? It’s free! - Composting:
Are you prepared for the statistic on the amount of cat and dog poop? 10 million tons a year! That’s right, and most of their waste ends up tied in plastic bags where it sits forever in a landfill. As long as you don’t put it anywhere near your vegetable garden, you can compost your pet’s poop in your backyard if there’s room by burying an old garbae bin. Here’s how.

Burying an old garbage can with no bottom is a great way to get rid of your pet waste. It does not look to bad and you can use the lid to keep out the smell.
I think that pets in general can be very green and help you for your green lifestyle. They help you get out on walks, they should force you to watch what kinds of cleaning products you use, and they in general keep you aware of your environment.
